Relativity

about

I've had the idea for this song for a while. I read descriptions of Relativity by Einstein in encyclopedias as a kid, but always thought that, in real life, it was really just a concept that describes how everything is related to everything around it. Never have I thought how deep that interpretation of mine could get.

Back in 2006, I was studying in KL, and there was this one night I went back to my parent's home in Seremban. Upon knowing my intended destination, the local cab driver I hired told me that earlier that day, there had been a train suicide near my place, where a mother brought her kids along to the train tracks in the backyard of their rail-side home, waiting for the train to hit them after an argument with her husband.

Later newspaper reports would state that the possible cause of the argument was the husband cancelling his family outing plans of a movie, and walked out the house after the big fight. Bollywood was later blamed by politicians. No shit.

In my earlier journeys to Singapore before I started my studies there, me and my dad would always take the train, although later on I would choose to take the bus because it was cheaper. I enjoyed the view of the plantations and villages we pass by along the tracks, also the farmers who still rely on trains to commute goods. It was like a journey back to Malaysia's past, but isolated from the politics, and the only ideology upheld was to live happily with whatever you have.

So more than 2 years later when I finished my studies in Singapore, I decided to spend my remaining Singapore Dollars in hand on a train trip back home for sentimental reasons. Plus it was easier to carry my 10kg box packed with all the books, vinyls, cds and clothes I've collected during my stay. One part that stayed difficult, however, was leaving my newfound love of almost a year at the time, as she was Singaporean. After trying our best make my last days the most memorable for both of us, we broke in tears the moment I stepped to the other side of the platform gates.

As my tears subsided a couple of hours later, I looked out the window and saw the plantations we passed by, children playing in the villages, old train stations, and I began to realize how deep the relativity concept could be. The fact that at any given time, we unknowingly coincide with other people, and if you look into the stories of each element that coexists within that timeframe and connection, you could get a bigger picture of how large, complex, and interconnected life on earth is.

Thus when I reached home, one of the first things I did in my unpacking period was to pen this piece down, stringing the train suicide together with my heart-wrecking journey into partly fictional stories that coincide at the incident.

lyrics

(intro)

Relativity: Physics. the dependence of various physical phenomena on relative motion of the observer and the observed objects..

Physical phenomena..

The observer..

(verse 1)

Two cycles 'round the sun, packed in a second hand box,
strolling through the hardest goodbye i never planned to face.
Amputate physical ties when they stamped my pass,
final turn,capture glimpse,hoping we're meant to last.
Walking monitored,heartbeat flat,as i crossed the platform,
that i once landed on.
These tracks of tears, it tears my flesh,
and formed the veins that forms myself.
History screams but i couldn't care less,
memories fade with each blow from the train's breath.
Once the pain evaporates i looked out the window,
sonic boom of the cabin kicking dust as the wind blows.
Passed by many colors. The nation's past life is shown-
on my journey back home.
Emotional stir shaken by the screeching brakes-
and horns, but we went on,couldn't afford a delay.

(bridge)

The dependence of various physical phenomena on relative motion of the observer and the observed objects..

The observed object..

(verse 2)

Married to a manacle, proposed her portions-
of love in hardship, even though they lived poor, still
they strolled through the bills, and grow their own stilts,
and despite some fights, they still loved the kids,
but when the storm comes he escapes with the spirits,
while she resides with the roar from the train visits.
Admires the steel muscling through her backyard,
once every meal time,it's the only home they can afford.
Fate had it's way,he cancelled an outing,
still in her make up when he left the home shouting.
Stone cold,broken promise,shattered holding glass,
it's the kind of breakdown that will be her last.
Woke the little ones,"we're going for a movie",
waited on the tear tracks and headed for the moon,see-
nobody could've predicted her suicidal actions,
but all she had to do was wait for the next train to come passing.

(news report)

Seremban. A mother and her two young daughters were killed, when a fast-moving train ran over them, on a railway track, near here.

The father, a contract worker, rushed to the scene, and, on seeing the bodies of his wife and daughters wept uncontrollably.

He later sat there numbed.

The victim's mother said, her daughter and son-in-law
had been having heated arguments for months, and the situation worsened when he lost his job recently.

“She thought of taking her own life on a few occasions, and the couple was quarrelling two days before the incident,” she sobbed.

Eyewitnesses claimed they saw the mother holding onto the children on the track, as a train approached.

One of the daughters, was seen struggling to be freed from the clutches of her mother, and breaking away before the train hit her family.

The victims were dragged about 100m after the crash.

The police had yet to establish the cause of the incident.
